Sports at the Y

Pearce came home from school one day complaining that he "was the only kid not on a sports team!"  I always said I didn't want  to put Pearce into sports until he expressed the desire to join.  I also wasn't eager to start Pearce in sports because I didn't want to give up weekends for games.  So, when I realized Pearce was serious about starting sports, I asked around and found out the Y was an awesome choice because they had sports teams that met once a week during the week....no weekend games or practises!  There was a 30 minute practice and then a 30 minute game...perfect set up for us!  Pearce wanted to try soccer first.  I signed him up for the winter season and he could not wait!  His practice/game was every Tuesday from 5:00-6:00.  It was so much fun watching him learn the game and make friends with his teammates.  His coach was so great at encouraging all of the kids.  I loved how the practice and games were not hardcore competitive.  After the 30 minute practice with his team, a Y ref came and had each team repeat the sportsmanship pledge and then the game began.  It was so fun watching Pearce during each game!  He definitely got braver and more aggressive with each game and as the season progressed.  At the end of the 6 week season, Coach Amanda gave out medals and told each child why they got that medal....Pearce was very proud!!!!!

Pearce wanted to continue with sports for the Spring season, but wanted to try basketball this time.  I signed him up through the Y again because I just love the format....weekly practice/game on the same night!  For basketball, he goes each Monday from 5:30-6:30.  Daddy got Pearce a new basketball and it was so amazing to see Pearce at his first practice.  Instead of being shy like he was for soccer, he went right on the court and started practicing with his team and Coach Ben.  What's so cool is that Pearce is actually good!  He makes the baskets more times than not and each week he just gets better and better!  During last weeks game, he was stealing the ball, making the baskets, and playing defense so well!  At one point, I heard a dad behind me say "Wow, that kid is good!"  He was talking about Pearce!  Another fun surprise is that one of his school friends is on the team too.....they are so cute together!  He's made several other friends on the team and I just feel like this is his sport.....until he gets to play flag football :)  They did not win their last game, but he got a medal, so he was very excited about that!
